New Private School option for 2011-2012

Opening in Sept, 2011, The Philadelphia Free School will be the only Sudbury model, democratic free school in the Delaware Valley. Serving children ages 4-19, it will create a space that rejects grades, bells and conformity, and centers instead, on curiosity, trust, and self reliance.   Students will direct their own learning based upon their interests and passions and curiosities.  The school's driving principles will be meaningful learning, citizen-building, and re-envisioning urban youth.

School District of Philadelphia PreK and Kindergarten Registration Open!

The first day of school for Pre-K, Kindergarten, Head Start, and Bright Futures may not be until September 16, but registration for the 2011-2012 school year is open NOW!  

To register for kindergarten, your child must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2011. The School District does not test for early admission to kindergarten.  Visit your neighborhood school and be sure to bring your child's birth certificate and up to date immunization records.  Also, bring:

Identification (one of the following is required)
Current Drivers License/Non-Drivers License
Valid Federal, State or Municipal employment photo id
Passport

Proof of Residency (one of the following is required)
Current Utility Bill (PECO, PGW, Water)
Current Voter's Registration
Original Rental Agreement/Leases (Must be typed, signed by all parties and notarized)
Deed
Residency Affidavit signed by homeowner/tenant or landlord and notarized.

Foster care/childcare and DHS letters are also acceptable for registration when student is in the care of a foster/child care agency.
Shelter placement or residency letters are also acceptable for homeless students.

In addition to kindergarten, there are also several free and low-cost prekindergarten programs in the district.  Sifting through eligibility is quite a challenge, but here's the run-down as we understand it.  The SDP provides direct services to preschool age children through Bright Futures, Comprehensive Early Learning Centers, and Prekindergarten Head Start Programs.  The district also helps private preschool providers establish and maintain quality in the Prek counts and Head Start Partnerships.

The program your child might qualify for depends largely on family size and income:

Income Eligibility:

Eligibility for all programs is based upon the family's income as related to Federal Poverty Income Guidelines (FPIG).  For Head Start programs, the family needs to be either at or below the FPIG or within 130% of the FPIG (depending on enrollment- up to 35% of the families can have higher income levels if the program is under-enrolled at the lower income level).

The Comprehensive Early Learning Centers (CELC) program serves parents who are working, receiving training or who are in school at least 20 hours per week and who need year round, extended day preschool services.  To register, telephone the Office of Early Childhood Education, PreK-3, at 215-400-4270 and ask for a CELC Application packet or
telephone your local center and ask to speak with the Center Leader.

Private School Open House Season... Round Two!

If you are planning on sending your child to private school for the 2011-2012 school year, get those applications in SOON!  But if you’re planning to apply for the following year (2012-2013), visiting during the winter/spring open house season is a GREAT first step.  It might seem early, but if you can narrow down the list during the spring, your fall will be MUCH saner.  The application process to most schools includes a written application, standardized testing for older children (informal evaluations for younger ones), a parent interview, and a morning (for younger) or day-long, or even multiple day visits for your child.  So doing the generic open house visits this spring, and scheduling private tours for your narrowed down list in the fall, streamlines the process during application season.  Most schools prefer to have applications (including visits) completed in December/January for first-round consideration. 

Also, once you’ve completed the application process and receive acceptances, I HIGHLY recommend that you visit the schools again on a normal day before making the final decision.  Spend time sitting in classes, hanging out at break/recess, and looking at your child’s future teachers and classmates... try to envision your child there.  Get a feel for the academics AND the social/emotional climate.  Spending a few mornings sifting through the schools will be well worth it in the long run.  


If a school you're considering is missing from the list, it may not hold spring open houses, but most schools are more than willing to schedule private tours.

Voluntary Transfer Program: Philadelphia Public Schools

Every student resident of Philadelphia has a neighborhood public school determined by attendance boundaries.  Students may enroll in those schools after providing proof of residency, but there are other public school options that some city residents might want to consider.

One of these options is to apply for the School District of Philadelphia's Voluntary Transfer Program.  The Transfer program allows students to apply to schools that might more closely support their goals, interests or learning styles.  Options for transfer include: Neighborhood Schools outside their assigned attendance area, Citywide Admission Schools, and Special Admission Schools.

A student may apply to up to five schools.  Some schools may require an interview or audition before making admissions decisions.  High School transfers typically require test scores, and applying early is recommended.  Acceptance and transfer are not guaranteed. There are separate applications for elementary/middle and high school students.  Any student in grades pre-k through eleven may apply.  Applications are accepted from September 20 through October 29, 2010.

Honoring Childhood: The Miquon School

This is another post in our series of Family Reviews on schools.  If you love your child’s school, preschool or center, please consider writing a review for GAP!  Please use the "contact us" button to let us know you’re interested. 

So while the little ones are attending Project Play School, the older kids are experiencing progressive education of their own at The Miquon School.  This school is another local  treasure, just ten minutes from Chestnut Hill.  My children absolutely LOVE school, and as both an educator and parent, I love it too.

Miquon is a wonderful blend of engaging curriculum and respect for childhood.  Children are exposed to long term projects, encouraged to create inventions, examine different parts of the world, and embark upon a varied offering of mini-courses.  


There is flexibility for children in both content and pacing, and children are encouraged to be active and curious learners.  The school employs Guided Reading, Writer's Workshop, hands-on math studies, and rich science and social studies investigations as anchors to the curriculum.  There are wonderful specialist/resource teachers for Art, Science, Music & Physical Education.  Yet throughout the course of a day, children still have 90 minutes of choice time.  


Much of that choice time is spent outside on the beautiful wooded campus, exploring the creek and creating the magical worlds unique to both Miquon and childhood.  The campus looks almost camp-like, which my children find both exciting and soothing.  I know they'll spend plenty of time after leaving Miquon in educational "institutions", so spending their grade school years in a setting that invites exploration and connection to nature is truly a gift.  And this experiential learning greatly enhances Miquon's academic rigor.  I've been equally as impressed with the content and scope of the curriculum as I've been with the social and educationally progressive atmosphere of the school.

Miquon begins at the nursery level for children, staring at three years old and continuing through sixth grade.  The Head of School, Julia Finney, is thoughtful and responsive, and the staff is simply wonderful.  


Teachers at Miquon know the children extremely well as both learners and people, and they care deeply about supporting the development of the whole child.  As a parent, I receive frequent, detailed, and helpful feedback about how my children are doing.  The end of the year reports, rather than simply posting a grade for 7 different subjects, are lengthy narrative descriptions of each child's functioning in a multitude of areas.  


Having recently attended my first Miquon graduation, I was very moved by both the school's commitment to the children and the children's commitment to and love for the school.  As someone who has spent a lifetime attending and working in and around schools, I know firsthand how unique that is.

Airy Independent, the Mt. Airy Teacher's Fund awarded $11,000 in grants last year to 26 public school teachers.  Grant sizes ranged from $385-$500 and helped to fund anti-bullying, conflict resolution, and other educational projects for Mt. Airy students.

New Charter School Possiblity: Learning Differences High School

The Whole Life Charter School is a proposed new charter high school in Cheltenham, accepting students from neighboring districts, including Philadelphia.  This charter school was underwritten by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as a thoughtful space for learning alternatives.  WLCS will be constructed with the guiding principles of Big Picture Learning and geared toward students with learning differences.  

This free public school will offer: a small school, small class sizes, student choice, student-initiated learning, learning by doing, strong and daily student advisory, intense project work, cooperative learning, and teaching the whole student.  The school day will begin later (consistent with research on adolescent sleep needs), and have a very different structure from traditional high school schedules, with longer blocks of time and more integration of subjects (rather than typical 45 minute periods for each discrete subject).   There will also be time spent each day honing skills for standardized tests, community meetings, and exercising.  


I attended an informational meeting for interested families.  The team for WLCS is very committed and hopeful for a September 2010 or January 2011 opening.  They have three options for possible locations and will select once the charter is approved.  Cheltenham residents will have first priority for the school, but any remaining slots may be filled with students in neighboring districts.  The WLCS team anticipates plenty out-of-district slots for students.

The 2009/2010 open houses for local schools are here! So, if your child will be attending Kindergarten beginning in 2010, and if you have not already made the big decision and want to check out schools, below are the dates you need to make note of on your calendars.

And this is the best time, also, to get a head start if your child is going to be entering Kindergarten in the fall of 2011. These open houses are one of the best ways to get to know a school and to get a feel for if a particular one is the right fit for your child. You will have the opportunity to tour the campuses and classrooms, speak with teachers, administrators, current parents and students, and even alumni. You will be able to ask your burning questions and discuss any concerns you have in a open format.

Reading statistics on websites and talking to friends is a good jumping-off point, but nothing compares to a personal visit to the schools you are considering. You will be surprised at how your opinion of a school may change after attending such an event.

Make sure to RSVP if you plan to attend an open house. There is sometimes limited space, so let the schools know early that you intend to come. You can find out who to contact by clicking on a school's link below.
