I know, it's difficult to believe.  Now, just when we've finally seen our first taste of real spring weather, it's time to sign up for fall soccer.  And yet, it's true.  The Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club registration for fall soccer is now open.  It will be open for a few months, but if you're like me, you'll forget, and then you'll be begging for a spot after registration is closed or your kid will never forgive you.  So my advice?  Do it now while you've got this nifty reminder.  Or just start noticing the lawn signs.

Intramural soccer starts at age 5 and goes through age 16... boys and girls, from the week after Labor Day through sometime in early November.  Yes, that means the last few games are played with unfashionable underclothes and cold, soggy parents, but it's all worth it in the end, right?  Games are all played in or around Chestnut Hill. The league is open to CH, Mt. Airy, Germantown, and other local residents.  It's a friendly league for the most part, at least as far as we've aged... through the U12 league.

If you're raising a budding Bekham, your child can try out for the travel team, but you must register by THIS FRIDAY for travel soccer.  Tryouts will be posted after registration, and any child who does not make the travel team is invited to do intramurals.  (U9-U15 levels)

Spring Sport sign-ups

Well, the fields might be soggy and icy right now, but it's really time for sign-ups for community spring sports.  Mt. Airy Baseball registration is open, and the winter clinics are currently underway at Ambler Sports Academy.  Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club is celebrating it's 50th year of baseball, with registration currently running for both baseball and girls' lacrosse.  Rumor has it that spots are filling very quickly in CH baseball, and the younger age levels may fill up in both communities before registration is officially over.

Mt. Airy Baseball: 

The Mt. Airy community league offers programs for boys and girls, ages 5-17.
Registration is now Open. There are three ways to register for the 2011 season:

1) Online Registration: Link to MAB online registration
2) Walk-in Registration: will be held the last 4 Saturdays in January: the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th and on February 5th. All will take place from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Mt. Airy Playground, Germantown Ave. & Sedgwick St.
3) Mail-in Registration: A mail-in registration form will soon be available on the website, mtairybaseball.org, or by calling 215-552-8103.

T-Ball (Ages 5 - 6): $45.00

The Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club is open to both boys and girls, ages 5-17.  

You do not need to be a resident of Chestnut Hill to play.  Although registration is open until mid-March, they

 will close each age group as the maximum number of players is achieved.  This could happen way before March!

Time to Suit Up...

No, not a Santa suit... we thankfully still have a few weeks for that.  But with December on its way, it's time for youth basketball in the GAP area.  Here are two local spots for hoops:

Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Basketball League (ages 6 & up)
Co-ed league with once/week practice and once/week games.  Coached by volunteer parents and community members.  Kids over age 7 must attend tryout session to be placed on a team.

Matt Paul Basketball (ages 5 & up)
Boys and girls aged 5-17 learn basketball and life skills.  Program is run by basketball players.  Weekly clinics, individual and team coaching, summer and school break camps, pre-season workouts, drills and skills and specialized workshops.  Players receive individual and group instruction, refine and develop skills through targeted and interesting drills (ball handling, shooting, passing, rebounding and defense) and participate in individual, 3-on-3 and full-court competitions.

Tennis

As the weather gets warmer and warmer I've been thinking about tennis-- a sport I used to do as a kid and absolutely loved. I never took lessons and never got very good at it but I adored taking up the racket and hitting the ball as hard as I could, and then trying different swings, imitating Andre Agassi as I played.

It got me thinking about tennis courts in this area, and on my walk to Germantown Pediatrics the other day I went past the Woodford Tennis Club, right on Wister Street in Germantown, tucked behind large trees with a beautiful, gigantic house in the front. I didn't get a chance to walk through and check out what it was all about but if this intrigues you like it intrigued me, I suggest looking at this website list of Philadelphia Tennis Courts where there are listings for an Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center and more in and around this area.

Let me know if you find any free tennis lessons for children or tennis camps. Heck, let me know if there are tennis groups for moms who are reminiscing about their past sporty selves too.
